This is another elephant crossing letter, but with a different elephant.  This happened just up the channel from our tent, but we were in the vehicle.  We noticed him way out in the open like this and he was moving right along.

Jackson said the elephants that are old enough, like this one, can remember when this area was still used for hunting, so when they are in a clear area like this, they want to get across right away to safety.  Jackson also noted that this elephant had worn all the hairs off the end of his tail.  The tail hairs are about the thickness of a pencil lead!

He was hustling right along!  He didn't stop to look at us or to let me get any face shots at all.  Look how prominent his spine is and how the back curves up over the rump.

As he got near the far side, he even raised a little dust.

Whew!  Made it !  That back foot shows he was really truckin'.
The wav file with this letter was called elephant greeting.  It's elephant farewell in this case, don't you think!
