Most people do not find wildebeest to be a handsome animal--they seem to have parts from
lots of other animals sort of thrown together. Usually you see one bull guarding an open bit of land
and trying to get cows to join him. This is how you often see them when they have formed a small
herd--just walking along to find water or better grass.
This bull seemed to be the leader of the group. Isn't the grass pretty.
Suddenly they began to run as though something were chasing them.
Jackson said he was sure there must be a predator in the tall grass, but we
couldn't see anything coming.
This is a maneuver that wildebeests make just as a big cat starts to jump on them.
You can see it would be very effective at stopping a lion or leopard with a swift kick in the chest.
But we never saw anything chasing them. After a bit they stopped and went back to walking again.
A mystery.
This is another herd seen at a different time of day--what a difference the light
makes in the color of wildebeests.
