This will be a kinder, gentler buffalo letter. The first picture is of
part of the herd drinking and then wallowing in a waterhole that is drying up. They love
to wallow in the mud and cover themselves with it to keep insects off. The egrets join
them here too. This is not early in the morning--it's already quite hot and also not good
light for photography.
The female buffalo have much less boss and more circular horns.
There was a female looking at something in the grass for quite a while, but
we didn't pay any attention. We should have been watching her five minutes earlier.
Here's what she was encouraging to get up for the first time! Just by looking elsewhere, we
had missed the actual birth, but he's still wet here and the afterbirth was still hanging from
the mother. The oxpeckers come instantly to help clean up.
His second step--by which time, in my excitement, I'm able to focus!
And off they go--got to keep up with the herd.
One last buffalo shot--with action.
