I should have said earlier that suricate is the more official name for meerkats.
The babies were so adorable! They didn't come out until the adults had
decided it was safe. Raptors are their main predators, but any of the cats would like them as a snack too.
One of the things that makes it easy to quickly tell a meerkat from
mongoose is that meerkats run with their tails up.
The very young ones didn't stand upright as much as the adults. They
obviously depended on their parents to spot danger in time for them to duck down a hole.
Meerkats dig their own tunnels but will also go down the holes of ground squirrels or yellow
mongoose. The three species sometimes even live together in the same warren.
The babies played just like kittens or puppies, while the adults scanned the
horizons. They see the shadow of a raptor long before they would see the actual bird and
dash for cover.
Kanga-meer or Meer-roo
The whole gang wrestling, except one who is too young for those ruffians.
This is how they walked along looking for goodies to eat. They eat
insects and other invertebrates, not just scorpions, and also lizards and even birds.
