Apologies to those of you who know the Cheethams and have seen these pictures
before.
Erika and Tony added this wonderful outdoor living area to their house a
couple of years ago. It is a wonderful spot and so pleasant to be in--no bugs and it stays
very cool even in warm weather. Unfortunately Tony has recently retired from the Palabora
Copper Mining Co., where he was the corporate secretary, and they will be moving back to
Johannesburg, where they still have a house and where their children live, in July. The
house sold the first day it was listed.
This is the outdoor area with the pool in the background. It's much
larger than these pictures make it look.
Looking back towards the house from the pool. The corner of the teak
railroad sleeper wet bar shows on the lower right and the black square is actually a fireplace,
especially fitted for braais (barbecue).
The Cheethams little Yorkie, Guiness, gets very excited when anyone goes in
the pool. He barks all around the edge and wants you to splash leaves or even just water
out at him which he tries to catch.
Sometimes he gets over exuberant and falls in.
Erika made a beautiful runner for the table. It's quilted and has an
appliquéd tribal design of lizards running the length--it's probably 12 feet/4m long.
Here's just a bit of the design. The little crackly lines in the background were made by
spreading mealies (pap, grits) on the cloth, letting it dry, wrinkling it, and then applying
fabric paint which seeps through onto the cloth. It's a wonderful effect.
