In the Kruger Park you drive yourself and go out of the camps as
early as you can to see the animals when they are most active. The gates
open at 5:30 at this time of year and you have to be back in at 6:00. You
are not allowed out of your car at all except in certain designated areas that
are few and far between. This is for your own safety, of course--it's not
a zoo and all the animals roam totally free, going where they want, when they
want.
Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. It's better to
wait when you see this approaching, rather than try to go quickly by.
There is usually one who will reinforce this good decision of yours.
And you'd better respond quickly to his suggestion that you back up a little before
the young ones cross.
Here's one now.
All's clear when Big Mama brings up the rear of the line--there were 23
in this group.
These photos were all taken through the heavily tinted windshield of
the car and, of course, with the engine running--one keeps the engine on near elephants.
