Here are those cheetahs I mentioned that were watching the impala. We first saw
them in tall grass and the picture possibilities were very limited, so I was thrilled when they sauntered
up to this high rock and lay down.
Every move they
made was another picture. I thought they were probably youngsters about
three years old, away from their mother for a few months and learning to hunt
together. But they were actually brothers, nine years old who had been
hunting the Savuti Channel area together since they were very young. They
are a very successful hunting team--robust and healthy with beautiful
coats.
Here one checks
out a sound from another direction. They were very
alert.
One even stood up
to check out whatever was over that way. It wasn't the impala--they were
in the other direction entirely.
This was my
favorite. The picture is way too busy with all the leaves, all the
shadows and all the spots, but what a neat pose of the three
brothers.
When it became
clear that they weren't going anywhere and not going to bother with those
impala, we went on, but ran into the cheetah brothers later in the afternoon
very near the same spot, but in some better shade--very drowsy but still
alert.
