One of the first things we found out when we got to Africa was that Jack's Camp,
by the Mgadigadi Pan, where we had reservations for three days, had just torn down all their tents
for a complete renovation, and we had been changed to their sister camp, the smaller 'more rustic',
San Camp. As we flew towards the camp we entered a dense fog, which didn't make sense since
it is a totally dry area. We found out after we miraculously landed in our teeny four seater
on a smoothed place in the salt pan, with what seemed to us like zero visibility, that it was a
sand storm! It disappeared just as quickly as it appeared which was a great relief to me--I
had visions of us not able to go anywhere.
I had asked when the word rustic was used if the San Camp tents had plumbing
and was assured that they did. I needn't have worried. Our tent............
.................had a washing facility with solid copper fittings.............
...a personalized shower......................and matching toilet facility with a
seat..
Boys came with fresh hot water for the jug in the predawn hours and refilled
the shower at midday so we could shower after lunch and before our naps, which were needed since
we had been up since 5:00. Fortunately, the other tents were so far away that we could have
gone to the little out tents with nothing on, but we were furnished with kikuyu wraps (see me
above) along with the luxurious towels.
There was only one other couple at San--the camp can hold 12 people--and they
were in that last tent to the left of the larger palms.
The mess tent--the left one you can see here--was about three hundred yards
from our tent, so we got plenty of exercise just going for meals.
That's the pan in the background--miles and miles of nothing. San Camp
is very much in the old colonial image, with white canvas, leather chairs, antique chests, and
high iron beds, wonderful meals, and a fully stocked bar. They have a very small wonderful
staff team, all male. They do all the cooking, serving, laundry, cleaning--their only
complaint is carrying the heavy water containers twice a day to such widely separated tents.

On the advice of several knowledgeable people, I need to say again here that all
the photos in these letters are copywrited by Bruce W. Krucke/Toogoodoo Studios and may not be
used for any commercial purpose without express permission. Having said that, I would also
like to say that they all (except the one of me above!) may be ordered as high resolution prints
in the approximate 8X10 size for $20.00. And they can also be sent in higher resolution for
commercial internet use--the price to be determined by the use.
