This little guy was my favorite--nothing was going to stop him from eating his
food! He got a burr in his foot later and cried a little--that was the only crying in the
whole group the whole time. Most were barefoot, but some had shoes or flip-flops, and some
shared a pair.
Some of the older girls, who had younger siblings with them, took their
containers of food back to their houses.
Here are two more with babies on their backs. It's quite possible that
these girls are heads of their households, having lost both parents to aids, which is rampant
among the African population in South Africa.
These three girls are the helpers for the soup serving. They help the
children line up and keep order. They are active in the church and all want to be teachers
when they grow up. They made sure that the children who had attended Sunday school got three
slices of bread!
Erika also gives needlework lessons to some of the ladies of the village.
Here they are showing off their work. They have also made hats and children's clothes.
Erika and I are handing out bags of cloth that was donated by the ladies in
Erika's walking group. The sewing ladies will probably quilt with it.
